by Yeb Saño,
After our stop in Geneva and after a tearful goodbye to the friends we have made (from the World Council of Churches, the Lutheran World Federation, and the ACT Alliance as well as with the local Filipino community and Catholic parish), we continued on our journey and crossed the Swiss-French border into the riverside scenic town of Seyssel beyond nightfall.
After over six months of eager anticipation and journeying through different parts of the world, the People's Pilgrimage had finally landed on French soil.
Like the moment when we crossed the magnificent Alps, crossing the border into France was a sublime feeling, knowing that the next chapter of our pilgrimage has started to unfold. Upon reaching Lyon, we had reached two-thirds of the distance between Rome and Paris. As the first major French city to welcome the Pilgrimage, Lyon welcomed us with aplomb, through the collaboration between the French Protestant and Catholic communities, which was deeply inspiring.
Highlighted by a welcome reception at the Trinity Church temple, an ecumenical roundtable at the Catholic University of Lyon, and an ecumenical liturgy at Saint Pothin church, our stay in Lyon was remarkably touching. On the day we left, about 200 people gathered at the Palace of Justice to send us off and the people walked with us up to the next town of Neuville, which we reached after nightfall and were welcomed by the people bearing large candles.
The candles sparkled in the distance as we approached the little town nestled on the banks of the Sôane river.
This amazing show of support has brought so much warmth and hope in our hearts and was a good sign of things to come as we continue with our every step.
