The Great Obstacle: Crossing The Alps

by Yeb Saño,

The last couple of days marked the halfway point on this pilgrimage from Rome to Paris: we have officially walked 750 kilometers. It's an important milestone for us to reach this halfway point of the route.

We've met a lot of amazing people in the last couple of days and have seen our first glimpses of the magnificent scenery of the Alps.

It's stunningly beautiful to see the Alps and while it's also very imposing to see them, the group is in high spirits, and I am in high spirits as we continue this journey. We've been very busy the last couple of days wracking our brains on how to cross the Alps. It's by no means an easy task—it's already the colder part of the year and the snow has reportedly already fallen on the Great St Bernard Pass which will be our route as we cross the Alps by foot.

So it's both a combination of eager anticipation and also a little fear about doing that. I feel very responsible for the group and for the wellbeing and safety of everyone.

I truly believe overcoming an obstacle, the real physical and mental obstacle of the Alps, is a very powerful symbol of what the world needs to see.

I think as we continue this fight against climate change we need a lot of courage and we need to believe that we can overcome any obstacle that stands in the way.

So yes, crossing the Alps is an important symbol.
